Ok! Let’s Get REAL about KERATIN hair treatments

The Beauty Industry Should NOT Be a Hazard to Your Health!

The United States and now the world has been taken with this not so new anymore hair craze that has proven itself to revolutionize the beauty industry which seemed to be a much better alternative to the back in the day Japanese hair straightener that was beyond permanent and strict on it’s limitations after procedure is done.

Brazil introduced to the Beauty Industry a smoothing system that would straighten a woman’s frizzy, unmanageable, curly, or wavy hair. It was softer than a common relaxer and the results were straight, smooth and beautiful.

Let’s start with this…

What is Keratin?

Keratin is a type of protein found in the skin, hair, and nails.

Keratin Treatments target that very protein to reconstruct and restructure the hair to a more manageable state that controls any natural frizz whether from virgin hair or damaged hair due to chemicals and dyes.

Women fell in love with the results, celebrities were getting on the bandwagon and for a good year, Keratin Treatments were on top of the game in the beauty world.

Then something catastrophic began happening behind closed doors in the beauty industry. Keratin Treatments that were a lengthy process with fog filled air of toxic gases irritating clients and hair dressers eyes began making people sick. Allergic reactions were spreading in different variations according to each person. More serious illness like cancer began to struck people’s immune systems and for a while, no doctor could diagnose what was happening to certain cases. Then the sad incident that took this behind the scenes problem and made it Public News happened.

The recorded first death due to Formaldehyde from Keratin Treatments.

There were many mixed reviews, comments and criticism about whether or not people truly wanted to give up using such an amazing system that truly worked. Many even a year later are still arguing whether they care or not about risking their health in regards to still using the Formaldehyde Keratin products because they love the results so much.

It caught attention for caution but still did not create enough to truly ban the product and find or create an alternative. No one knew how to create an alternative that worked with great results as the toxic ones.

Woman and stylists were enduring the harsh chemicals, looking ridiculous with masks of all sorts over their faces, trying not to inhale the chemical cloud that made a salon look like San Fransisco’s skyline.

OSHA which is like the FDA for the beauty world noticed certain incidents that finally starting catching someones attention.

They began investigating and started testing almost all Keratin Treatments, especially most that claimed to be Formaldehyde Free and were NOT…at all.

Beauty Magazines like Vogue, Allure, American Salon and others have released some of their magazine issues that speak of the dangers of Keratin treatments that have formaldehyde or other forms of it. (other names: formol, methyl aldehyde, methylene oxide, methanal, methylene glycol)

Some things about this Formaldehyde thing we keep hearing about…

Carbon compounds of formaldehyde can be found in things such as automobile exhaust, and in tobacco smoke which to me, makes sense how tobacco can cause lung cancer and so has formaldehyde derived Keratin Treatments but at a much faster rate than tobacco.

Formaldehyde can be toxic, allergenic, and carcinogenic (any substance or agent that tends to produce a cancer)

I think celebrities (who many follow and look up to for beauty guidance) need to do their research and not play with health. Think of the hair stylist who breathe in the toxic fumes daily and other clients just sitting next to someone getting the toxic treatments and being affected.

(The only company I will highlight by name in this blog was birthed through the company’s CEO’s personal experience with formaldehyde keratin treatment before there was an alternative)

Lets Start Rapping This Up…

my personal journey and research

I know a few people who have stories of their encounters with treatments containing any form of formaldehyde or aldehyde derivatives.
After hearing and researching, I did love the results and wanted to tame my hair being that I live in humid Florida but did not want to risk my health.

Still want Keratin…no prob! Finally an Alternative!

Of all the Keratin Treatments out there, there is only ONE I have found that is 100% safe, no toxic chemicals and that works!

The CEO’s experience with formaldehyde Keratins made them very sick for a year. Doctor’s could not figure out what was wrong with them. In time, they discovered the root of it which was formaldehyde. The company’s CEO-President was determined to find an alternative, even more so when an ex-coworker for a Keratin product fell ill to Cancer from Formaldehyde.  Later KERAGREEN was birthed. The first organic and natural safe Keratin formula in the market.

KeraGreen Keratin & Protein Treatment is made from certified organic and natural ingredients that are NOT toxic or harmful. It is Formaldehyde free! It contains no synonymous ingredients to aldehyde what-so-ever! and the results are beautiful!

KeraGreen Keratin and Protein Hair System controls frizzy, unmanageable hair and restores strength to weakened follicles all while preventing further hair loss. Our exclusive formula of natural and organic active components of essential amino acids, proteins, minerals, and citric acid extracts, will moisturize, repair, rejuvenate and strengthen your hair!

When the OSHA debacle released information about testing Keratins, only a few companies had 2.0 & or less of formaldehyde in them. KeraGreen had natural ingredients that when under heat gave off less than .001% (estimate) of formaldehyde (which are found in fruits in very small doses -it’s an organic compound found every where but in microscopic measures, like strawberries, cherries, bananas, ect). But never had the KeraGreen company put directly any chemical remotely resembling aldehyde.

Current reports now show that KeraGreen legally can state they have NO formaldehyde or synonymous ingredients in their formula. The only Keratin formula out in the market that can say that.

Read an explanation of the reports: Click the link below from their Distributor’s (of the United States and Canada) website. It’s a quick and simple, easy to understand report.

  1. I love love love this blog it was fact filled and so true. At first as I was reading it I became worried; I am a salon owner and I offer Keratin treatments. Then as I read further I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Keratin offered at our salon is safe and good for myself and my clients.
We run an all Organic Salon and it has been the best choice I could have ever done for our neighborhood, my clients and myself.
    Thanks for the great blog.

Thank you so much for sharing by the way! I have a passion to see the beauty industry stand with integrity for the consumers as well as those who practice within the industry! Beauty should NOT come at a dangerous cost, no matter what the “saying” say! 🙂 Bests!

  2. This is the biggest topic in hairdressing. My big question is does this mean we’ll have to stop coloring our hair seriously this topic is getting so boring because we should be put everything then under the microscope. From sydney Australia

      Hello, Sydney Australia…
To answer your question, No you would not have to stop coloring your hair because the ammonia and chemicals in Hair Color is not causing an increased number in just 2 years of Cancer, Fatal Allergic reactions to people’s immune systems, young children to develop dangerous lumps in their throat, all which Doctors will not easily detect when going in for a check up.

My mother almost died two years ago because of Formaldehyde based keratins and for a year doctors and specialists couldnt figure out what was wrong with her. Till finally they did and till this day she is still detoxifying her bloodstream with many pills and creams. The topic I agree, I’m bored with it and it needs to STOP, people should do their research and not risk health for beauty.

I’m grateful you have not had any close experiences with yourself, family or friends who have suffered from this. The fact that deaths and many in hospitals with cancer still this day because of formaldehyde based Keratins, all increased and occurred in as little as two years since this became a greater product in the beauty industry IS cause for alarm. Thank you for checking out the blog. Bests Regards!

  3. Thank you so much! I am so tired of feeling like the only one who believes in health and beauty! I am a stylist who has refused to perform these treatments from day one until Keragreen! Keep blogging and keeping people in the know!

  4. thanks for this post, As a stylist I did my research wanting to offer a service to my clients to change their life :), I went with Keragreen, I have only done 2 so far, they both have just washed their hair for the 1st time in 4 days, one told me it dried faster but not much different than before, that’s not good, (she was my model and I didn’t charge her phew)
the other some curl when wet, dried way faster, not super smooth, but it ironed way better than ever b4. She is happy, but I think we both expected air dry smooth, SO, I would LOVE to hear more reviews on Keragreen, and experiences from other users! thanks

    • you can not expect miracles with an organic product my dear.

      • hopesreadywriter

hahaha, oook…good thing I dont have to expect a miracle, the product does the job as it says it does and does it well in quality and safely! I dont promote lightly! Hope you get to try it for yourself and realize it’s amazing!

  5. keragreen does not claim to change the structure of the hair, therefore it will not straighten or relax a curl. what it will do is take 85% of the frizz out of your hair and that it does very efficiently. as long as you educate yourself on the type of product it is and the type of results it will produce it will be amazing. besides the formalehyde and aldehyde other keratin treatments often contain ammonium thioglocolate which is the chemical that will change the structure of the hair during a perm. another reason why the are getting straighter results. hope this helps.

    • hopesreadywriter

Thank you for the researched information…absolutely, they say they’re not a straightening treatment but a smoothing system that will smooth out curls in time and eliminate frizz while putting more protein and nutrients in the hair, helping to restore it which is what it’s done to my hair. They use a mixture of amino acids such as citric acid and proteins that together create the smoothing action without the need of harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, aldehyde or methylene glycol, formalin which other companies have been using to mask they have a carcinogen (harmful toxic cancerous chemicals to straighten hair)…Thanks again for your post comment!

  6. I have very fine, curly hair. My main concern is to lock the humidity and moisture out. This product does help some but is not the instant fix I was so hoping for. I will purchase again.
