The United States and now the world has been taken with this not so new anymore hair craze that has proven itself to revolutionize the beauty industry which seemed to be a much better alternative to the back in the day Japanese hair straightener that was beyond permanent and strict on it’s limitations after procedure is done.

Brazil introduced to the Beauty Industry a smoothing system that would straighten a woman’s frizzy, unmanageable, curly, or wavy hair. It was softer than a common relaxer and the results were straight, smooth and beautiful.

What is Keratin?

Keratin is a type of protein found in the skin, hair, and nails.

Keratin Treatments target that very protein to reconstruct and restructure the hair to a more manageable state that controls any natural frizz whether from virgin hair or damaged hair due to chemicals and dyes.

Women fell in love with the results, celebrities were getting on the bandwagon and for a good year, Keratin Treatments were on top of the game in the beauty world.

Then something catastrophic began happening behind closed doors in the beauty industry. Keratin Treatments that were a lengthy process with fog filled air of toxic gases irritating clients and hair dressers eyes began making people sick. Allergic reactions were spreading in different variations according to each person. More serious illness like cancer began to struck people’s immune systems and for a while, no doctor could diagnose what was happening to certain cases. Then the sad incident that took this behind the scenes problem and made it Public News happened.

The recorded first death due to Formaldehyde from Keratin Treatments.

There were many mixed reviews, comments and criticism about whether or not people truly wanted to give up using such an amazing system that truly worked. Many even a year later are still arguing whether they care or not about risking their health in regards to still using the Formaldehyde Keratin products because they love the results so much.

It caught attention for caution but still did not create enough to truly ban the product and find or create an alternative. No one knew how to create an alternative that worked with great results as the toxic ones.

Woman and stylists were enduring the harsh chemicals, looking ridiculous with masks of all sorts over their faces, trying not to inhale the chemical cloud that made a salon look like San Fransisco’s skyline.

OSHA which is like the FDA for the beauty world noticed certain incidents that finally starting catching someones attention.

They began investigating and started testing almost all Keratin Treatments, especially most that claimed to be Formaldehyde Free and were NOT…at all.

Beauty Magazines like Vogue, Allure, American Salon and others have released some of their magazine issues that speak of the dangers of Keratin treatments that have formaldehyde or other forms of it. (other names: formol, methyl aldehyde, methylene oxide, methanal, methylene glycol)

Some things about this Formaldehyde thing we keep hearing about…

Carbon compounds of formaldehyde can be found in things such as automobile exhaust, and in tobacco smoke which to me, makes sense how tobacco can cause lung cancer and so has formaldehyde derived Keratin Treatments but at a much faster rate than tobacco.

Formaldehyde can be toxic, allergenic, and carcinogenic (any substance or agent that tends to produce a cancer)

I think celebrities (who many follow and look up to for beauty guidance) need to do their research and not play with health. Think of the hair stylist who breathe in the toxic fumes daily and other clients just sitting next to someone getting the toxic treatments and being affected.
